The Story
SouthSide Works is a 34-acre mixed-use development on the site of the former LTV Steel hot strip mill on the banks of the Monongahela River. Opened in phases beginning in 2004, the development transformed one of Pittsburgh's most significant industrial sites into a district of retail, dining, entertainment, office, and residential space.
The project represents one of Pittsburgh's most ambitious brownfield redevelopment efforts. Where steelworkers once operated blast furnaces, the site now hosts restaurants, a cinema, fitness centers, residential buildings, and office space for companies including REI and other national brands.
Under new ownership by SomeraRoad Inc., SouthSide Works is undergoing a new wave of investment aimed at reimagining the district as a more walkable, mixed-use neighborhood. Plans include additional residential units, creative office space, and enhanced public amenities along the riverfront.
What Makes It Pittsburgh
SouthSide Works is Pittsburgh's steel-to-future story in physical form. Standing on the site, you can feel the weight of what was there before and see what Pittsburgh became. The transformation from LTV Steel to a mixed-use neighborhood is the city's economic reinvention made tangible.
The South Side's industrial heritage is everywhere, from the remaining mill structures to the scale of the development itself. SouthSide Works proves that Pittsburgh's industrial sites, far from being liabilities, are the foundation for the city's next chapter.
