Hazelwood Green represents one of the most ambitious urban redevelopment projects in the United States. This 178-acre site along the Monongahela River was once home to the Jones & Laughlin Steel Company's coke works, and its transformation into a mixed-use innovation district is a powerful symbol of Pittsburgh's post-industrial reinvention. The project is led by a partnership between the Richard King Mellon Foundation, the Heinz Endowments, and the Claude Worthington Benedum Foundation.
The development plan calls for a walkable, transit-connected neighborhood with space for research labs, advanced manufacturing, offices, retail, and housing. Mill 19, the signature adaptive reuse of a historic steel mill building, now houses Carnegie Mellon University's Manufacturing Futures Initiative and the Advanced Robotics for Manufacturing Institute. New tenants continue to commit to the site, bringing biotech, climate tech, and workforce training operations.
Hazelwood Green is designed from the ground up with sustainability in mind, incorporating green infrastructure, stormwater management, and a commitment to net-zero energy. The project also prioritizes inclusive development, with goals for affordable housing and local hiring that aim to benefit the surrounding Hazelwood community alongside the broader Pittsburgh region.
