ALMA | LEWIS has announced an October 23–24, 2026 reopening weekend for its expanded contemporary art space in Pittsburgh’s East End. The program combines a ticketed Friday benefit, a free Saturday community day and the opening of a Cecil McDonald, Jr. survey exhibition.
The distinction between the two days matters for visitors: Saturday’s public activities are explicitly free, while Friday’s benefit directs guests to purchase tickets. The announced event venue is 6901 Lynn Way, Suite 101, Pittsburgh, PA 15208. Check the individual event page before making plans rather than assuming the whole weekend has the same admission arrangement.
The expansion adds room for exhibitions, studios and research
In its capital campaign description, ALMA | LEWIS says the larger facility will triple its footprint and double the exhibition area. Plans include artist studios and areas for research, education and gathering, with a street-front entrance intended to increase public access.
The organization also describes an expanded role for The Black Archive, its non-circulating collection of books, exhibition catalogs, ephemera and artworks centered on Black arts, culture and history. Non-circulating means this is a research resource rather than a take-home lending collection.
The campaign sets out a five-year plan to double the number of artists supported through fellowships and the organization’s financial investment in those fellowships. Those are announced future commitments, not a claim that every projected increase has already happened.
Friday’s benefit previews the space and exhibition
The Color is Life Grand Reopening Party is scheduled for Friday, October 23, 7–10 p.m. The published program includes drinks from Allora Wine Group, food catered by Black Radish Kitchen and curated by Kate Romane and Tunde Wey, and music by DJ Nate Da Barber.
Guests are offered a private exhibition preview, a tour of the renovated space and visits to the studios of artist fellows Layo Bright and Sharbreon Plummer. The organizer says proceeds support free public programs, exhibitions, The Black Archive and artist fellowships. Use the event’s ticket link to check the currently available admission options; no price is assumed here.
Saturday’s community day is free and family-friendly
The October 24 Community Day runs from 2–5 p.m. Its listing promises free food and beverages, tours, exhibition viewing and hands-on activities led by artists. Bright, a visual artist and sculptor, and Plummer, a writer, scholar and interdisciplinary artist, are scheduled to participate in open studios.
The page provides an RSVP link and identifies the venue as wheelchair accessible. Readers with specific access or participation questions can use the organizer’s listed email, hello@almalewis.org, before visiting.
The exhibition continues beyond opening weekend
Cecil McDonald, Jr.: The American Beauty, curated by Kilolo Luckett, is scheduled October 24, 2026–March 6, 2027. The organization describes a survey spanning more than two decades of photography, montage, film and video, examining family relationships, masculinity and Black cultural life.
The related Joy Ride: An Odyssey in Black ceremonial walk is scheduled October 24, 3–4 p.m., through Homewood. It is described as a one-mile performance with spoken word, drumming and movement. Check with the organizer for route and participation details rather than treating the venue address as a verified starting point.
