Pittsburgh's AI ecosystem had another landmark moment on Thursday when Gray Swan, the Carnegie Mellon University spinout focused on AI security and safety testing, announced it has raised $40 million in a Series A funding round — a milestone that puts the young Shadyside company at the center of one of the most consequential debates in global technology.

Founded in 2023 by CMU professors Matt Fredrikson and Zico Kolter, Gray Swan operates out of Ellsworth Avenue and has built a reputation as the go-to firm for testing whether AI systems can be trusted before they reach real users. The company's tools have already been cited in safety reports from Anthropic, OpenAI, and Meta, placing Gray Swan at the table with the most powerful AI developers in the world — not bad for a company that is barely three years old.

The round was co-led by California-based Wing Venture Capital and Seattle-based Madrona, with additional participation from Obvious Ventures, Snowflake Ventures, Hudson River Trading, Samsung Next, and Pittsburgh's own Magarac Venture Partners. The breadth of the investor group — spanning Silicon Valley, the Pacific Northwest, and Pittsburgh's local venture community — reflects how seriously the financial world is now taking AI safety as a commercial discipline.

Three Products, One Mission

Gray Swan's platform rests on three interlocking components. Shade tests AI models for weaknesses before deployment, finding the cracks before a system ever faces a real user. Cygnal operates in real time, monitoring live AI deployments and blocking dangerous behavior as it emerges. And Arena connects both tools to a global network of more than 15,000 ethical hackers who continuously probe AI models for vulnerabilities and feed updated threat intelligence back into the system. Together, the three form what Gray Swan describes as a comprehensive defense layer for the AI economy.

The company says it is already working with more than 20 customers across frontier labs and global enterprises, including Snowflake, whose venture arm invested directly in the Series A. That customer base underscores a core commercial thesis: as AI gets deployed faster and in higher-stakes contexts, the tools that ensure those deployments are safe become essential infrastructure rather than optional add-ons.

What the Capital Will Build

Gray Swan plans to use the new funding to accelerate its go-to-market operations, deepen partnerships with frontier AI labs, and grow its team significantly. The company is currently hiring for engineering, sales, and marketing roles, with some positions carrying salaries up to $260,000 — a competitive benchmark that signals Ellsworth Avenue is now in direct competition with the best tech corridors in the country for top AI talent.

The company was the top-ranked company on Technical.ly's 2026 RealLIST Startups for Pittsburgh — a recognition that reflects both its technical standing and its economic significance for the city's innovation ecosystem.
