Moonlit Burgers has moved from pop-up to full restaurant. The smash burger outfit, which built a following through its mobile kitchen and temporary residencies at neighborhood bars, has opened its fourth and largest location on Penn Avenue in Garfield, with a proper kitchen, full table service, and plans to become a permanent fixture of the Penn Avenue corridor.
The expansion marks a turning point for the business. Moonlit Burgers started as a one-truck operation, rolling into parking lots and bar patios, building a customer base through word of mouth and social media. Over three years, the concept has proven itself: there is durable demand for smash burgers done well, and Pittsburghers will seek them out.
Penn Avenue Gets Its Burger Anchor
Penn Avenue in Garfield has been in transition for years. The corridor is anchored by Garfield Jubilee, a community organization that has been working to strengthen the neighborhood through programming, business development, and neighborhood activation. Moonlit Burgers is the kind of tenant the avenue needs: a brand people will travel for, but rooted in the neighborhood's future.
