CMU President Farnam Jahanian framed the award in the broadest possible terms, connecting the region's steel-and-coal heritage to a coming era of AI-enabled energy infrastructure. "Working together, we can accelerate innovation, strengthen energy resilience, and create new pathways to prosperity for our communities and our nation," he said in remarks accompanying the announcement.

University of Pittsburgh Chancellor Joan T. Gabel echoed that ambition, noting that the RETI Engine represents the kind of cross-border institutional collaboration that Pittsburgh has become increasingly known for. "This is a landmark moment that highlights our shared vision and collaboration with WVU and other partners to modernize the energy grid, revitalize advanced manufacturing, and create thousands of new jobs across our region," Gabel said.

A Competitive Win with National Implications

The NSF Regional Innovation Engines program is among the most competitive federal science investments available, modeled on the idea that place-based innovation clusters are the fastest path to translating research into economic impact. The RETI Consortium spent two years in a rigorous selection process before earning one of only 12 slots nationwide. That vetting process makes the award both a validation of the region's existing capabilities and a substantial down payment on what comes next.

Erienne Olesh, CEO of the NSF RETI Engine, pointed directly at the market forces driving the urgency of the work. "RETI is built to meet this challenge," Olesh said. "Anchored in the heart of America's historic energy corridor, the Consortium will develop hardware, software, and AI technologies to help secure America's energy supply, strengthen the grid, and power the next generation of U.S. manufacturing."

The bipartisan support for the award is also notable. Both U.S. Senator Dave McCormick of Pennsylvania and U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito of West Virginia issued statements of support, with McCormick calling it "exactly the kind of collaboration that keeps our region at the forefront of innovation." Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, who has made the Pittsburgh region's innovation economy a centerpiece of his economic agenda, has invested heavily in the broader ecosystem that makes awards like this possible.

Pittsburgh's dual research anchor institutions have long been assets the region talked about in aspirational terms.
