Pittsburgh has spent a generation producing the researchers, robots, and ideas that define the autonomous future. Now, for the first time, two of the city’s most influential innovation institutions are combining forces to make sure American drone companies can actually build what that future demands.

Carnegie Mellon University and Pittsburgh-based venture studio Carnegie Foundry announced the launch of the Autonomous Systems Manufacturing Platform, known as ASMP, at the Pennsylvania Defense and Innovation Summit held July 14–15 in Carlisle. The initiative channels $50 million in existing CMU resources into a shared manufacturing infrastructure that drone and autonomous systems companies can access without having to build those capabilities themselves.

The platform bundles AI-enabled robotics, manufacturing automation, digital engineering, inspection, and testing capabilities under one roof at CMU’s National Robotics Engineering Center in Lawrenceville. Two drone manufacturers already under contract with the Department of War—ViDARR and Envision Technology—will be the first to plug into ASMP, using Pittsburgh’s infrastructure to move from prototype to production at a pace that traditional defense contractors rarely achieve.

By opening CMU’s existing infrastructure to outside companies, Pittsburgh essentially becomes a shared factory for the autonomous systems industry, lowering the barrier to domestic production at a moment when the federal government is prioritizing American-made hardware.

Carnegie Foundry, the venture studio behind several Pittsburgh robotics and defense-tech spinouts, is providing the commercial coordination that connects university capabilities to market-ready companies. The partnership reflects a model that Pittsburgh has been quietly perfecting for years: translate world-class academic research into real product in the same city where it was invented.

Pittsburgh’s Defense-Tech Moment

The ASMP announcement was one of several Pittsburgh wins at the Pennsylvania Defense and Innovation Summit, which brought more than 1,000 defense founders, executives, and government procurement officers to Carlisle. The event underscored just how central Pittsburgh has become to the national defense technology conversation.

CMU’s Resilient Intelligence Systems Lab also showcased autonomous drones capable of navigating complex, unstructured environments using no more computing power than a typical smartphone—technology with applications ranging from search-and-rescue to medical supply delivery in hard-to-reach locations. That research, combined with ASMP’s manufacturing muscle, gives Pittsburgh companies a rare combination: the ability to invent, prototype, and manufacture autonomous systems without leaving the city.

For Pittsburgh, the significance runs deeper than a single platform launch. The region now hosts a robotics and autonomous systems ecosystem that spans federal research, private venture capital, defense manufacturing, and commercial deployment. ASMP is the connective tissue that links those layers together, making it far easier for the next generation of Pittsburgh-rooted drone and robotics companies to go from idea to fielded product.
