El Colibrí’s Garfield restaurant gives a business that grew through Pittsburgh markets and pop-ups a permanent Penn Avenue home. The useful change for customers is an additional way to find the family’s Mexican street food: a storefront alongside its market and catering routes.
This October 13, 2026 guide covers an earlier opening and current visit information. VisitPITTSBURGH reports that the Garfield restaurant opened in June. That is background on an established 2026 opening, not an announcement that it is opening today.
A family business that began on First Friday
The operator’s history traces its start to July 2022, when the family began selling food during First Friday on Penn Avenue. Bloomfield Farmers Market became its first market location operating under the business name.
The same page identifies co-owners Jeimy Ibarra, Pedro Ibarra and Rocio Ruiz. Jeimy manages aguas frescas, catering and the team; Pedro prepares birria and salsas; Rocio prepares gorditas and huaraches. The operator explains that the hummingbird name represents intelligence, beauty, devotion and love.
Invest PGH’s Penn Avenue account describes the move from markets and pop-ups to a physical restaurant, including URA financing for the transition. It places El Colibrí beside Polly and Esther’s boutique and describes commercial kitchens, equipment and renovation costs as part of that move. The account does not establish a new financing award today.
Compare the food formats and ingredient choices
The official website describes birria tacos, quesabirrias, handmade huaraches, gorditas, elote and aguas frescas. It identifies meat-based, vegetarian and vegan choices, including oyster-mushroom birria and vegan elote.
VisitPITTSBURGH’s account describes nopales as chopped prickly-pear cactus paddles with tomatoes, onion and cilantro, alongside choices such as chicken tinga, soy chorizo and potatoes. Those descriptions help distinguish the filling from the food format: choosing a taco or gordita is a separate decision from selecting what goes inside.
The operator describes its menu as gluten-free and says vegetarian and vegan catering choices are available. Discuss the complete ingredients and preparation directly if dietary requirements matter to the order. A published menu description does not replace an individual conversation about the selected dish.
Use the storefront hours, not the market schedule
The website lists 5331 Penn Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15224, 412-254-4451 and elcolibrillc@gmail.com. Published storefront hours are Monday 9 a.m.–8 p.m., Tuesday–Friday 9 a.m.–9 p.m. and Saturday 3–9 p.m. It does not list Sunday storefront hours.
The same site separately lists Bloomfield Farmers Market on Saturdays and Squirrel Hill Farmers Market on Sundays, each 9 a.m.–1 p.m. Check the actual market date and season before relying on those recurring listings; they are different service locations from the restaurant.
Confirm the current menu before ordering or arranging catering
The food-menu page, checked in the browser, says the menu is being updated. This guide therefore does not repeat an older price list. Use the operator’s linked ordering route or contact the restaurant for current selections and prices.
Catering and party enquiries have separate routes. Our El Colibrí profile links the official information. Confirm quantities, collection arrangements and the final menu for a gathering rather than treating an ordinary restaurant order as an event package.
