Registration is open for Pittsburgh's 24th Annual Gingerbread House Display & Competition, giving families, schools, community organizations and professional makers a chance to contribute to a Downtown holiday tradition. Entries must be registered by 11:59 p.m. Sunday, November 8, 2026.

The CitiParks Office of Special Events announced the opening on October 6. Its official announcement says the display will open at the City-County Building on November 20, remain available for Light Up Night on November 21 and continue into early January. Some daily visiting details are still to be announced.

Choose a category and read the current guidelines

The 2026 competition page links registration and full program guidelines. Its categories cover children, schools, nonprofits and other entrants, including families, adults, professionals, city departments and neighborhoods. School divisions range from preschool and kindergarten through high school and culinary school, giving groups several ways to participate.

Before designing a house, use that current page to select the appropriate division and read the program requirements. Registration is the first deadline to put on the calendar; builders should also check the guidelines for preparation and delivery instructions rather than assuming those happen on the registration date. Questions can be directed to gingerbread@pittsburghpa.gov.

The event's FAQ says judges consider structural soundness, compliance with guidelines, creativity, difficulty, appearance and neatness, with most of the house and decorations edible. A group can use those priorities to organize its work: agree on a design, identify the pieces that need advance preparation and leave time to assemble and transport the finished entry. Consult the full guidelines for the actual requirements.

A display with several kinds of recognition

The city says the competition names nearly 20 category award winners, alongside overall recognitions. Clearview Federal Credit Union representatives select the Clearview Classroom Choice from participating schools. Carnegie Museum of Art curatorial staff select the Curator's Choice, and the display also includes a People's Choice voting award.

Clearview returns as presenting partner for the city's official holiday events. For school groups, the competition offers a project that can bring design, construction and teamwork into a shared seasonal activity. The invitation extends across the region, so prospective entrants should review the category rules rather than assume participation is limited to a single neighborhood.

What visitors can plan now

The competition page identifies the City-County Building at 414 Grant Street and lists a noon ribbon cutting on Friday, November 20. It directs visitors to the Ross Street entrance and lists closures on Thanksgiving, November 27 and Christmas Day. Regular display hours and the final date are still marked as to be announced; do not carry over a previous year's schedule.

The city's holiday events page schedules the November 21 Grant Street celebration from 4–7:30 p.m., including the tree lighting, fireworks and light show from 5–5:20 p.m. It says the gingerbread display closes at 7:30 p.m. that evening. Check the official pages again before traveling for updated entertainment and visiting details.

The competition began with Downtown hotels in 2002 to benefit the Children's Hospital Free Care Fund and moved to the City-County Building in 2019. This year's registration window gives a new round of builders time to join that tradition, while visitors can begin planning a Downtown holiday stop as the remaining schedule is finalized.
