Pittsburgh residents planning a museum visit or a cultural outing have another place to check before buying tickets: RAD Pass, an online ticket-lending system for Allegheny County library cardholders. Its offers can provide free or discounted admission, but each reservation has its own date, availability and redemption conditions.
This guide explains the booking process from official program information checked October 13, 2026. It is a practical guide to an established service, rather than an announcement of a new launch. A partner appearing in the program directory does not guarantee that tickets are available today.
1. Start with a current library card
The RAD Pass website directs users to select Reserve a Pass and sign in with an Allegheny County library card number and PIN. Cards must not be expired. Residents can apply online or visit an Allegheny County library with identification and proof of a current county address.
Check your account before organizing a group outing. A forgotten PIN or an expired card is easier to resolve before choosing tickets. Keep the card number and PIN private; this guide does not require readers to share either with The Pittsburgh Wire.
2. Choose a date and read the offer
Reservations must be made at least one day ahead and used on the selected date, according to the program homepage. Browse by attraction or date, then check the offer’s guest allowance, age conditions and any separate checkout steps. Do not assume that a pass covers every person in a household or every special exhibition.
The official FAQ says some offers depend on ZIP code or the cardholder’s age. Partners set their own pass limits, and users may hold three active reservations at a time. If an expected offer is missing, availability or eligibility may explain it.
3. Follow the correct redemption route
RAD Pass describes three redemption formats: a digital or printed pass, a promotional code to use at the attraction’s checkout, or a link with the discount applied. Read the instructions at the bottom of the reserved pass instead of treating the confirmation alone as an admission ticket.
Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh waives printing charges for RAD Pass passes; other county libraries may have different printing policies. If you need a paper copy, ask your branch before travelling. Check whether identification or an additional ticket from the attraction is required.
4. Compare the participating organizations
The partner directory includes Carnegie Museum of Art, Carnegie Museum of Natural History, Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh and City Theatre, among other cultural organizations. These examples show the program’s range, not a ranking or a promise of inventory.
The directory identifies digital or printed passes with ID for the two Carnegie museums and the Children’s Museum. Follow each organization’s official link to check opening hours, accessibility information and visit arrangements. For broader outing ideas, compare our Pittsburgh museum guide, then return to RAD Pass to see whether a suitable offer exists.
5. Handle changes before the visit
If plans change, consult the cancellation instructions. The FAQ distinguishes passes that have not been downloaded from those already retrieved; downloaded passes require a cancellation request through the reservation system’s contact link. Allow time for staff to respond rather than assuming a request immediately restores availability.
Before leaving home, confirm the date, group size, redemption steps and the attraction’s current hours. Keeping those checks together helps turn a library-card benefit into a visit that works for the whole group.
