Commonplace Coffee’s café inside Northland Public Library gives North Hills visitors a place to combine a coffee stop with reading, studying or a library visit. The important scheduling detail is that the café and library have different closing times, even though they share an address.
This October 13, 2026 guide covers an established location at 300 Cumberland Road, Pittsburgh, PA 15237, in McCandless. It revisits the library expansion that opened in December 2025 and uses current operator and library information for visit planning. It is not an announcement of a new October opening.
The café arrived with the library’s expanded lower level
Northland’s December 19, 2025 announcement confirmed that the renovated and expanded library had opened after a yearlong construction project. The two-story addition included Commonplace’s café, an accessible lower-level entrance, expanded teen space and a mezzanine reading area.
The café occupies the lower level, with large windows and seating incorporated into the expanded building. The project also moved the Book Nook used bookstore to a more visible lower-level space and added an upper-level conference room. Those changes explain the setting; they do not establish availability of a particular table or meeting room.
Check café hours separately from library hours
The operator’s Northland page lists café hours Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m.–6 p.m.; Friday, 9 a.m.–5 p.m.; Saturday, 9 a.m.–4 p.m.; and Sunday, 1–4 p.m. The direct café phone is 412-514-6631, and the page offers online ordering for pickup.
Northland’s café information page agrees with that schedule. Its regular library hours extend to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 6 p.m. Friday, 5 p.m. Saturday and 5 p.m. Sunday. A late library visit therefore does not mean the coffee counter will still be serving.
Confirm holiday closures or special schedules before traveling. The library’s December announcement defines its regular Sunday schedule as the period between Labor Day and Memorial Day weekends, so do not carry fall Sunday assumptions into a summer visit.
What the library says about food, seating and connectivity
The library describes coffee and tea beverages, scratch-made baked goods, and grab-and-go breakfast and lunch items from Commonplace’s bakery. Its café page lists banquette seating with tables and chairs, plus a nook with L-shaped seating. Wi-Fi extends into the café, and additional seating is available on two levels.
That description supports planning a café stop, but does not guarantee a specific pastry, lunch item, seat or internet speed on arrival. Use the operator’s pickup route for the current order options and ask about ingredients or availability directly. Our Northland café profile links the official information.
Plan access and choose the right kind of space
The library’s accessibility page lists designated parking on both levels, a lower-level access ramp, a flat upper-level entrance, automatic-door push plates and an elevator. Staff can help with building accommodations; call the library at 412-366-8100 for access questions.
For a quiet visit, the same page identifies upper-level quiet areas and silent study facing Cumberland Road. For business activity, review the no-solicitation policy: it prohibits business meetings in public spaces and directs commercial users to authorized meeting-room arrangements. Café seating should not be assumed to permit a client presentation or reserved group workspace.
