For Pittsburgh nonprofits researching grants, The Pittsburgh Foundation’s application portal is only one part of the process. An organization also needs to match the right program, check eligibility and confirm that the application window is actually open. Several published 2026 deadlines have already passed.

This October 13, 2026 guide brings together the Foundation’s official program, eligibility and application pages. It covers established grantmaking procedures and dated announcements, not a newly announced funding round. The individual program’s current instructions should govern an application.

Check dates rather than relying on an open label

The grant opportunities page lists the foundation-directed fall application deadline as July 15, 2026, at 5 p.m., with funding decisions after October 28. The spring deadline was February 3. Both application dates are in the past as of this guide, and the future fall decision date is not an invitation to submit late.

The page says most programs follow those dates, with differences specified on individual program pages. It also retains a “currently open” label for Advancing Black Arts alongside a June 24, 2026 closing date. Confirm a current application window directly rather than treating that label alone as proof of availability.

Match the organization and funding type

The general guidelines describe nonprofits located in Allegheny County or primarily serving county residents, unless a program specifies otherwise. They require public-charity status or an eligible fiscal sponsor and warn that individual opportunities can impose additional criteria.

For 2026, the Foundation lists preferences including operating budgets under $2 million, grants received since 2023 and responses to federal policy or funding shifts. Preferences are not guarantees. Review the exclusions as well: examples include organizational startup costs, annual appeals, event sponsorships and costs for activities completed before a grant decision.

The FAQ distinguishes project/program support from general operating support. It says fiscal-sponsored organizations cannot receive operating-support grants through that route, and applications are not accepted for donor-advised funds. A project fitting one category does not establish eligibility for another.

Small and Mighty has a specific 2026 restriction

The Small and Mighty page says its 2026 program is invitation-only for 2024 grantees not transitioning to foundation-directed grantmaking. It points other organizations toward checking eligibility under the Basic Needs focus area. An older description of support for small nonprofits should not be read as a general open invitation this year.

Use one organizational portal profile

The application guide instructs applicants to establish one organizational profile. Setup requires an email username, contact details, organizational information including EIN, executive contact information and any additional users. Existing organizations should resolve access or staff transitions before creating a duplicate. The guide says Foundation staff must edit an established organizational profile.

The portal maintains application history, allows draft enquiries and displays application status. Awarded organizations can use it for reporting deadlines and progress reports. For background, the May 29 spring announcement reported 124 grants totaling $7.9 million; those completed awards do not establish current availability. Our Foundation profile links official guidance and the general phone, 412-391-5122, for confirming the appropriate contact route.
