For a first indoor-climbing visit in Pittsburgh, compare the type of climbing, admission and rental costs, and the required orientation before choosing a gym. A general day pass and a coached class are different arrangements, and a waiver is only one part of the check-in process.

This October 13, 2026 comparison uses current official information from ASCEND and Iron City Boulders. ASCEND leads for the variety of published terrain at Point Breeze, including roped climbing and bouldering. Iron City is an alternative for a bouldering-focused visit in Lawrenceville. This is an editorial selection based on those practical differences, not an independent safety or teaching-quality ranking.

1. ASCEND: Point Breeze terrain and a detailed first-visit route

The Point Breeze page lists 7443 Thomas Boulevard, Pittsburgh, PA 15208, and 412-745-7443. It describes lead-climbing, top-rope and auto-belay walls alongside bouldering, fitness facilities and a youth development area. Ask staff which options match the visitor’s experience and what instruction or authorization is required.

Its current weekly schedule lists weekdays 6 a.m.–11 p.m. and weekends 8 a.m.–8 p.m., with holiday and temporary closures to be checked separately. ASCEND also operates a South Side gym; select the actual branch before arranging a class or visit. Our ASCEND profile links the operator.

The admission page lists an adult day pass at $22 and qualifying off-peak admission at $18. A day pass applies to the location where purchased or redeemed. Rental equipment is generally separate, except shoes on a first visit; later shoe rentals are listed at $7, with rental charges subject to tax.

Off-peak windows are weekdays before 3 p.m. and weekends after 4 p.m., with excluded dates. Confirm the actual total and applicable discount before paying rather than assuming the lowest displayed price applies to every visit.

The first-visit page requires account and waiver completion and mandatory orientation-video viewing. Ordinary visits do not require reservations, but groups of five or more children must arrange one. Minors need a guardian-created waiver and adult accompaniment on their first visit; children thirteen and younger require direct adult supervision on all visits.

2. Iron City Boulders: a Lawrenceville bouldering visit

The official visit page describes a bouldering gym at 143 51st Street in Upper Lawrenceville. Its standard day pass is listed at $22, with climbing shoes rented separately for $6. A student or military pass is $20 with the required identification. Confirm the current admission and rental combination directly.

Published hours are weekdays 6 a.m.–10 p.m. and weekends 9 a.m.–9 p.m. The day pass includes climbing and fitness areas and allows leaving and returning that day. This is a different terrain choice from booking a roped-climbing session.

Before participation, the gym requires a completed and verified waiver, orientation-video viewing and review of its policies. A parent or legal guardian must complete waivers for ages seventeen and younger. Adults must accompany climbers under thirteen, who cannot use the fitness and training areas.

The page recommends Bouldering 101 for newcomers; check the class calendar for its price and an available session. For either provider, ask about the visit format before arrival and follow the staff’s required orientation and facility rules.
