Pittsburgh Regional Transit has announced two separate disruptions affecting trips this weekend and next week. East Busway passengers face daytime detours on Saturday and Sunday, while South Hills bus and rail riders should prepare for a Mt. Washington Transit Tunnel closure beginning early Monday.

The notices have different locations, service arrangements and end dates. Check the one that matches your route rather than assuming a weekend detour and a weekday tunnel closure describe the same work.

East Busway: October 31 and November 1

PRT’s October 29 East Busway notice says the section between East Liberty Station and the Neville Busway ramp will close from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day on Saturday, October 31, and Sunday, November 1. Contractors will be working at the UPMC Assembly Building on Centre Avenue.

Negley Station will be out of service during the work. Inbound and outbound buses will instead stop on Ellsworth Avenue at Negley Avenue. The agency anticipates delays of up to 15 minutes.

For a trip normally beginning or ending at Negley, identify the replacement stop before leaving home. Check both directions if your return journey is later in the day. The posted work window is daily, so a Saturday morning trip and a Sunday evening return need separate checks against the notice.

Transit Tunnel: early November 2 through November 7

The Mt. Washington Transit Tunnel announcement schedules closure from 1 a.m. Monday, November 2, through the start of service Saturday, November 7. Crews will repair and replace overhead electrical lines.

Light rail in both directions will detour through Allentown. A rail shuttle will link Station Square’s outbound platform and Allegheny Station. Inbound buses will use Allentown, while outbound buses will use the Wabash Tunnel.

PRT says Wabash will remain outbound throughout the day during the Transit Tunnel closure, replacing its usual weekday directional pattern. The morning inbound operation will be suspended. Riders should expect delays of up to 20 minutes, according to the agency.

Check the transfer as well as the timetable

Use PRT’s schedules alongside its current detour information. A regular departure time alone does not answer where to board during temporary work. Write down the route, direction, replacement boarding point and any transfer needed for the actual day of travel.

For a time-sensitive appointment, allow room for the agency’s stated delay and for finding an unfamiliar stop or platform. These notices do not supply a guaranteed arrival time. Recheck the operator’s updates before traveling, especially near the scheduled beginning or end of a closure.

PRT lists customer service at 412-442-2000. The agency’s website also provides its current contact hours. Waiting until Monday to plan would miss the East Busway weekend restrictions and the tunnel closure’s early-morning start.
